LA’s Tangerine (the duo of Marika Justad and Toby Kuhn) today shared their breezy, buoyant new single “You’re Still The Only One,” the title track of their debut album out this Friday, October 25th. Addressing a lover, "You're Still The Only One" finds Justad expressing a desire to be better for them, and to shake off the blues in order to embrace a joy that feels just out of reach. It arrives with a dazzling video directed by her sister Miró Justad and premiering at FLOOD Magazine. "We liked the idea of riffing off of mythology – hence the character of the selkie – and transporting that into how it might've been represented at an old Victorian 'freak show,'" Miró explains of the video. "But ultimately, it's all to portray an emotional journey of a person breaking free from a narrative that has previously caged them, and heading into the unknown of life—an experience that is colored by joyous appreciation of a longtime love for themself and also for someone else."
Today’s release follows the album’s delicate, enveloping “Thieves” and lush, expansive lead single “Timeless,” which have earned support from The Alternative, Atwood Magazine, Buzzbands.la, Northern Transmissions, and more. You’re Still The Only One is now available for pre-save HERE.
“You’re Still The Only One” Video Stills
You’re Still The Only One finds Tangerine grounded in a world at once natural and mystical, evoking images of clear blue skies, dusky desert magic, pink glowing sunsets, a full moon, or soaking rain. Light pours out of each melodic hook, lifted by Justad's shimmering, heartfelt vocals. Across the album, Tangerine grapples with all the bittersweet feelings and anxieties that come with getting older, and experiencing loss and change. It’s a journey towards letting go in order to embrace a full spectrum of love, sorrow, pleasure, and pain; it’s a journey towards acceptance of the instability in the world, in order to find peace.
“After a death in my family, I found myself in a process of negotiation with the universe,” Marika explains. “It became an urgent question for me, this idea of how to reconcile with a world that is unreliable, one that seems to reject any simplistic sense of right or wrong, or of meaningful narrative, that we try to place on it. It’s like something just sort of broke open, and I found myself unable to look away from the primal forces at work in the world. I’m trying to tease apart the beauty from the ugliness.”
Tangerine was formed in 2012 by Marika (vocals, guitar), Miró (drums), Kuhn (guitar, production), and former bassist Ryan Baker. Encouraged by early successes such as spins on KEXP and 107.7 The End, and a streaming hit with single “Feel This Way,” the Justads and Kuhn relocated to Los Angeles as a trio in 2017. Soon after, they joined Bleachers on the road as main support for a North American tour and worked with Zach Dawes (Lana Del Rey) and Mikey Schuman (Queens of the Stone Age) on singles “Sly Moon” and “Fever Dream.” But the family loss in 2019 brought everything to a halt, and the band took a much-needed break to process and grieve. In the stillness that followed, Justad and Kuhn began to write what would become their first full-length album as a duo.

Praise for You’re Still The Only One:
"Where 'Timeless' was soft and sultry, 'Thieves' is a more stripped-back track that allows … Justad’s gossamer voice to stand front and center; it’s not too far off from the mellow pop-country that Kacey Musgraves explores on Deeper Well” - The Alternative
“‘Timeless’ is as enchanting as it is invigorating…a song that harnesses both their pop and rock roots to great effect as they steadily emerge as one of this and next year’s artists to watch” - Atwood Magazine
“gentle yet angsty vocals and a catchy alt-’90s guitar hook” - Buzzbands.la on “Timeless”
